How we judge a rate
Every exchange store buys and sells around the mid-market rate and keeps a margin. We show that margin as a percentage of what you would get at the mid-market rate. These are the same bands the TourIts app uses:
| Verdict | Store keeps | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent rate | up to 1% | That’s about as good as cash exchange gets. |
| Fair deal | 1–3% | Right in line with reputable exchange stores (1–3%). |
| A bit pricey | 3–5% | Acceptable, but you could probably find better nearby. |
| Probably a rip-off | 5–10% | More than 5% above the real rate. Consider trying another store. |
| Tourist trap | over 10% | Markups this high target tourists. Walk away if you can. |
- Reputable exchange stores in city centres usually keep 1–3%.
- Airport, hotel and tourist-street counters often keep 10–20%, sometimes hidden as a “0% commission” rate.
- Always ask for the final amount in your hand before you hand over your money, and count it at the counter.
- Paying by card abroad? Choose to pay in the local currency, not your own.
Rates are indicative mid-market rates updated once a day, not an offer to exchange money. TourIts is not a bank or money changer.
