Se déplacer
Transports en commun
Rav-Kav
National smart card for buses, trains and the Tel Aviv and Jerusalem light rail. Load it at machines or with the Rav-Kav Online app. Most buses also take contactless bank cards or app payment (varies).
Transports en commun
Moovit
The most used route planner in Israel, with live arrival times and in-app ticket payment.
Taxi
Gett
Most used taxi app; books licensed metered taxis and runs the official taxi dispatch at Ben Gurion Airport. A small regulated booking fee applies.
Taxi
Yango
Second taxi app, also licensed taxis only. Its parent group handed operations to local franchise partners in 2025, so availability may change (varies). Uber does not operate ride-hailing in Israel.
Taxi
Street taxis
By law drivers must use the meter unless a fixed price is agreed in advance. Tariff B (higher) applies in the evening and on Shabbat morning, Tariff C at night.
Trains
Israel Railways
Fast trains link Ben Gurion Airport, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and Beersheba. No trains or most buses from Friday afternoon to Saturday evening (Shabbat).
Bus
Sherut (shared minibus taxi)
Yellow shared minibuses run fixed routes within and between cities, and many run on Shabbat when buses do not. Airport sherut routes were reported discontinued in 2026 (varies).
Argent et espèces
Devise: ILS · Israeli new shekel
Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, including most taxis and markets. Carry some shekel cash for tips, market stalls and small shops. Prices are high, especially in Tel Aviv. Waiters often prefer the tip in cash; if paying by card, tell them the tip amount before they run the card.
Pourboires
Tipping in restaurants is expected in Israel, usually 10-15%, and service is normally not included in the bill. Tips are an important part of waiters' pay. Taxis do not expect tips. Many menus and bills state 'service not included' (hasherut eino kalul).
| Restaurants | 10-15% for table service, 12% is common. Cash is preferred; with a card, say the tip amount before payment because many places cannot add it afterwards. |
|---|---|
| Cafés et bars | About 10% for table service; tip jars at counters are optional. |
| Taxis et VTC | Not customary; rounding up is optional. Tip more for help with heavy luggage. |
| Hôtels | About 10-20 ILS per bag for porters and per night for housekeeping is common but optional. |
| Visites et guides | Common: roughly 40-60 ILS per person for free walking tours, more for private guides and drivers (varies). |
| Livraison de repas | About 10 ILS or rounding up; can be added in Wolt or 10bis. |
Frais de service : le vrai du faux
Usually not included. Bills often state 'service not included'. Some restaurants add a service charge for large groups or events; it must be stated and shown on the bill (varies). An Israeli labour court ruled in 2018 that tips are part of the waiter's wage (from 2019), so tips go to staff but are counted toward their pay.
Techniques de pression à repérer
Waiters may point at the line 'service not included' or hand back the bill to ask for a tip; this is a normal reminder, not a scam, since a 10-15% tip is the custom. Watch for the opposite trick: a 'service' charge already added to the bill and then a tip asked on top. Check the bill; if service is included, say politely 'Ha-sherut kvar kalul' (service is already included). In a well-known 2016 case a restaurant near Jerusalem billed 8 tourists about 16,500 ILS including a 'service' charge despite 'service not included' on the bill; ask for prices first in tourist restaurants.
Phrases utiles
- החשבון, בבקשה (ha-heshbon, bevakasha) The bill, please.
- השירות כלול? (ha-sherut kalul?) Is service included?
- אפשר להוסיף טיפ באשראי? (efshar lehosif tip be-ashrai?) Can I add the tip on the card?
Savoir-vivre
- Dress modestly at holy sites: shoulders and knees covered for everyone; women may need a skirt in Orthodox Jewish areas and a headscarf at mosques; men cover their heads at the Western Wall (kippas provided).
- From Friday afternoon to Saturday evening (Shabbat) most shops, buses and trains stop, especially in Jerusalem. Avoid photographing or driving through Orthodox neighbourhoods on Shabbat.
- Israelis are informal and direct; first names are normal and bluntness is not meant as rudeness.
- Queues can be loose; hold your place politely but firmly.
- Bargaining is normal in markets and the Old City souks, not in regular shops.
- Ask before photographing people, especially religious Jews and Muslim women.
- Many restaurants are kosher: no mixing of meat and dairy, and they may close on Shabbat.
Arnaques et comment y faire face
Taxi meter refusal
Où: Ben Gurion Airport, central Tel Aviv, Jerusalem Old City gates
Comment ça marche: Drivers refuse to start the meter or quote an inflated fixed price to tourists.
Comment l’éviter: Use Gett or the official airport taxi rank, insist on the meter (it is required by law) and note the taxi number.
Unlicensed airport drivers
Où: Ben Gurion Airport arrivals
Comment ça marche: Men offer rides in private cars at high prices or with no insurance.
Comment l’éviter: Only use the official taxi rank or app-booked licensed taxis.
Restaurant overbilling
Où: Tourist restaurants in Jaffa, Jerusalem and nearby villages
Comment ça marche: No prices given for specials, drinks or a private room, then a very high bill sometimes including an unexpected service charge.
Comment l’éviter: Ask for the menu with prices and the price of specials before ordering, and check the bill line by line.
Pushy guides and 'free' gifts
Où: Jerusalem Old City, Mount of Olives, Bethlehem trips
Comment ça marche: Unofficial guides attach themselves to you, or someone hands you a bracelet, red string or blessing and then demands money.
Comment l’éviter: Say a firm no thank you, do not take items handed to you, and book licensed guides in advance.
Souvenir shop steering
Où: Old City souks
Comment ça marche: Touts lead you to shops where they get commission; antiques are often fake.
Comment l’éviter: Buy antiques only from licensed dealers with an export certificate; bargain everywhere else.
Beach theft distraction
Où: Tel Aviv beaches
Comment ça marche: Bags, phones and passports left on the sand are taken while owners swim.
Comment l’éviter: Do not leave valuables unattended on the beach; use lockers or keep one person with the bags.
Sécurité
- Security conditions change quickly. Governments currently advise against travel to some areas (including Gaza and parts of the West Bank and border areas) and urge caution elsewhere; check your government's latest advice before and during the trip (varies).
- Learn what to do when rocket sirens sound: download the Home Front Command app and find the nearest shelter or protected room where you stay.
- Theft of passports, cards and phones is common at public beaches.
- Carry your passport; security checks at malls, stations and sites are normal.
