Como se locomover

  • Trens

    ONCF trains and Al Boraq

Comfortable rail network linking Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Fes and Marrakech. Al Boraq high-speed trains run Tangier to Casablanca. Book on the ONCF website or app, not through resellers.

  • Ônibus

    CTM and Supratours

Reliable long-distance coaches to places trains do not reach (Essaouira, Chefchaouen, the south). Buy at the official window or online, not from touts.

  • Táxi

    Petit taxis

Small city taxis (colour differs by city) with meters, often shared with other passengers. Drivers often refuse the meter with tourists, especially at stations; insist on the meter or agree a price first and hail on main roads.

  • Táxi

    Grand taxis

Older shared cars on fixed routes between towns and to airports; the fare is split among passengers. You can pay for all seats to leave sooner.

  • App de transporte

    inDrive / Careem / Heetch

Ride apps operate in the big cities; inDrive lets you propose a price. The UK Foreign Office warns some app rides use unregulated vehicles. Uber left Morocco in 2018; some sources mention it again (varies).

  • Transporte público

    Tramways (Casablanca, Rabat-Sale)

Modern trams in Casablanca and Rabat; buy tickets at stop machines.

Dinheiro e câmbio

Moeda: MAD · Moroccan dirham

Morocco is still mostly cash: souks, petit taxis, small cafes and riads often take cash only. Cards work in bigger hotels, restaurants and shops. The dirham is a closed currency: you can bring in or take out only a small amount (tolerance about 2,000 MAD), so get it from ATMs on arrival and spend or change it before leaving. Exchange rates are standardised across banks. Keep small notes and coins, as change is often short. Card fraud is reported; prefer bank ATMs.

Gorjetas

Tipping is customary in Morocco and small amounts are expected for many services: waiters, guides, porters, parking guardians and people who help with directions. Amounts are modest; around 10% in restaurants is common (varies).

RestaurantesAbout 10% in sit-down restaurants (varies), less or rounding up in simple local cafes. Cash on the table is normal.
Cafés e baresLeave a few dirhams for table service.
Táxis e apps de transporteRound up petit taxi fares; no tip needed if the driver refused the meter and overcharged.
HotéisSmall notes for porters per bag and for riad staff at the end of the stay (varies).
Passeios e guiasGuides and drivers on day and desert tours expect a tip, often given per day (varies).
Entrega de comidaA few dirhams or rounding up.

Taxa de serviço: o que é verdade

Most restaurants do not add a separate service charge; prices on the menu are what you pay, sometimes with tax included. Check the bill for items you did not order: some places bring starters (olives, bread, salads) without asking and charge for them at the end.

Táticas de pressão para ficar de olho

People who give unasked directions, show you a 'shortcut', take you to a tannery or pose in photos (snake charmers, monkey handlers, henna artists) then demand money, sometimes large amounts. Agree prices before any photo, henna or guided walk, decline help you did not ask for with 'La, shukran' or 'Non merci', and keep walking. Do not show a large wallet when paying small tips.

Frases úteis

  • L'addition, s'il vous plaît / الحساب عافاك (l-hsab 'afak) The bill, please.
  • بشحال؟ (bshhal?) How much is it?
  • لا، شكرا (la, shukran) No, thank you.

Etiqueta

  • Dress modestly, especially in medinas and rural areas: shoulders and knees covered.
  • Most mosques are closed to non-Muslims; Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca offers tours.
  • Greet with 'Salam alaykum'; use your right hand to eat, give and receive.
  • Ask before photographing people; many expect payment or refuse.
  • Bargaining is normal in souks; start well below the asking price and stay friendly.
  • During Ramadan avoid eating, drinking or smoking in public in daytime.
  • Avoid public displays of affection; criticism of the King is illegal.

Golpes e como lidar com eles

  • Fake guides and 'shortcut' helpers

Onde: Medinas of Marrakech, Fes, Tangier

Como funciona: Young men offer to guide you or say the road is closed, then lead you to shops or the tannery and demand payment to show the way out.

Como evitar: Use offline maps, say no firmly and hire official guides with a badge through your riad or tourist office.

  • 'The square is that way' / road closed

    Onde: Marrakech medina

Como funciona: Locals tell you a street is closed or the square is in another direction to steer you into a paid tour or shop.

Como evitar: Trust your map, keep walking and ignore unsolicited directions.

  • Henna grab

    Onde: Jemaa el-Fnaa, Marrakech

Como funciona: Henna artists take a woman's hand and start drawing, then demand a high price.

Como evitar: Keep your hands to yourself and refuse firmly; agree price before any design.

  • Photo with snake charmers or monkeys

    Onde: Jemaa el-Fnaa

Como funciona: Handlers place a snake or monkey on you or demand large fees for photos.

Como evitar: Avoid them, or agree a small price before taking any photo.

  • Unordered starters on the bill

Onde: Tourist restaurants and food stalls

Como funciona: Bread, olives and salads are served without asking, then charged.

Como evitar: Ask if items are free before eating them, or send them back, and check the bill.

  • Taxi meter refusal

Onde: Train and bus stations, airports

Como funciona: Petit taxi drivers refuse the meter and ask for several times the fare.

Como evitar: Hail on main roads, insist on the meter or agree price first; use an app.

  • Card fraud and goods swap

    Onde: Shops, ATMs

Como funciona: Cards are skimmed, or merchants swap paid items for inferior ones when packing.

Como evitar: Keep your card in sight, use bank ATMs and watch your purchase being packed.

Segurança

  • Most visits are trouble free, but petty crime (pickpocketing, bag snatching) is widespread in tourist areas and beaches; avoid quiet medina streets after dark.
  • Women travelling alone often face unwanted attention; firm, short responses work best.
  • Aggressive begging can happen near ATMs; use ATMs inside banks or hotels.
  • Protests can happen in big cities; avoid them.
  • Check your government's latest travel advice before travelling (varies).

Quanto se fala inglês

Common among younger people and in tourist businesses in Marrakech, Fes and Chefchaouen; French is more useful than English elsewhere. Spanish is common in the north.
